Let me shock you with my dullness. I want to see you for the first time in the early morning the birds are singing and sunlight is breaching the horizon. Can you feel it? I want to see you for the first time on the train tracks with the little plants growing out of the sidewalk your hair undone with your shoes untied and all the things you never got around to saying, that trampoline in your yard, covered now with leaves from seasons on seasons of neglect. Things you left underground, undiscovered. I want to see you under the bleachers at some State school University of Madison or Iowa or Alabama I don’t care, anywhere. Wearing that letterman’s jacket telling you how I’m not like the others I’m a good guy and you just need to get to know me. And the cold is setting in and it’s almost Fall and we’re running scrimmages getting ready for the big game. I’ll go back in time to the first Christmas you remember, your first present heavy in your hands,you’re shaking it. And I’ll go back even further before you were even born, when you were a fertilized egg and I’d pop you in my mouth so you’d never grow up to be somebody who could hurt me. I love you, you’re my little darling, you’re my little angel my sweet thing.
